Description
For years, Paul has been developing a theory of difference — a way to blend the sociological and the psychological, to hold the social trauma of racism WHILE holding what we know about psychological and emotional development. In other words, how to hang onto the big picture without losing the individuals swimming within it.
He’s going to show us how to keep talking — and keep our clients talking — when conversations get difficult in the therapy room with individuals, couples, families and groups. And how to apply a psychoanalytic lens to what happens in society as a whole.
In Paul’s theory, we all share a “cultural mother”: the unseen but ever-present parental figure that we have conscious and unconscious relationships with. And as Paul says, “our cultural mother doesn’t love all her children equally.” When we begin with that idea in mind, we can examine transferences to each other, and to culture and society with more curiosity, openness and interest.
One more point: Paul said that it’s important to establish “a floor and a ceiling” with conversations about culture, inequity, racism and the like, i.e. staying grounded, and making efforts to regulate and co-regulate. Any conversation in this realm has the potential to be disruptive to our nervous systems for so many reasons.
